Culottes

I am at a stage in life where everyone I know is either getting married, having babies or celebrating other monumental life moments. Which means, bring on the parties!

This weekend I am attending a wedding shower for one of my best friends and opted for an outfit that is comfortable without having to wear a skirt or dress, but isn’t quite a regular pair of trousers. (Free the ankle!)

I must admit I was on the fence when I started seeing this voluminous pant style becoming popular. Culottes are loose cropped trousers, cut with full legs that resemble a skirt.  If you’re not feeling it, I can understand why. They don’t exactly scream wearable or flattering to a lot of women. Styling these pants is particularly tricky, but don’t worry I’ve got your back!

Since giving them a shot, I have discovered they are an easy style statement-making piece and work for any occasion, in any season. Literally, all of your tops will look good with these bottoms. There's something about culottes that give off an effortless chic vibe.

Try a pair that is mid to high waist in a solid color. They work great with a crisp white button down, a striped tee, or even a tight fitting turtleneck. I can’t wait to style these with an all black ensemble. If you’re still not sold, think about treating culottes as you would a swingy midi skirt, pairing them with everything from a cropped leather jacket and heels, to an oversized sweater and booties.

I’m on the short side, so I feel like I pull this look off better with heels, but they are just as stylish with ballet flats, ankle boots or white sneakers.

You also can totally get away with wearing these to work, and like I said they are a comfortable option for brunch, a date and even a casual dinner party. It’s a great way to break away from the weekend denim, and step-up your office game.

If you still feel intimated by this out-of-the-ordinary silhouette, try on a pair and see if you like the length. There are different style options that might not be as big or flowy, and some that might have a higher waist or even tie at the hips, like the pair I am wearing (although styled in a way you can’t tell in these photos.) Culottes pack a lot of charisma, and when styled right have fashion-girl drawing power.

I styled mine in classic black and white with a loose daisy-textured top. (I love the dainty lace print!) I added mirror shades, my favorite bag for a pop of pale pink and mismatched earrings. How cool is this simple pearl paired with this mohawk style ear-climber?!

So whether you want to look uptown chic or downtown cool, there is a pair of culottes out there for you, you just need to be brave enough to give them a try.

Springtime Dresses

Happy Easter weekend friends! I hope you are enjoying the holiday with warm sunshine, family and friends.

It’s officially spring and nothing makes me happier. Time for twirly dresses, floppy sunhats, and bright floral prints.

You can almost feel the onset of summer.

My littlest is a spring chick, and I’m filled with wonder at the fact that she is about to turn two! I can’t wait to hop around with her tomorrow in our pretty Easter dresses.

I purchased this floaty dream towards the end of summer and have been dying to wear it ever since. (I’m an out-right nerd about saving items for just the right occasion.) And if you can’t tell, I was equally excited to pop on this delicious flower crown as my third piece.

My woven basket is by Eliza Gran Studios and is equal parts artful and adorable. I’ve been using it as a carryall, and when it’s not in use, it’s on display in our house. A combination of function and beauty, the number of uses for this coveted basket are endless. It’s the perfect companion for a trip to the farmer’s market, or could be filled with a pretty potted plant.  I’ve used it to store everything from toys and blankets to magazines.

This weekend take time to step outside and explore. Pedal your bike at max speed. Climb a tree. Lace flowers in your hair. Slip off your shoes and feel the grass between your toes. Take a deep breath of that green glorious earth and just be.

discovering and identifying personal style

Happy weekend guys! Welcome to The Weekender - A Fashion Field Guide.

Typically, a field guide is designed to identify wildlife birds/flowers or other aspects in nature through photographs and drawings, and organized by color, shape, location or other descriptors.

The Weekender is about discovering and identifying personal style. My “field” exists between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This is where I find myself most style-conscious. Organizing an outfit by color, shape, and location. (Just like a field guide – but for fashion.)

I’m a creature of fashion. I believe the more glamorously strange the better. Personal style is an evolution and here you will find a place to explore with endless options of self-expression.

Taking an outfit that “sort of works” to “polished loveliness” is a challenge. Think of the times you felt most polished and lovely. It takes effort (amiright?) It takes thought. It takes feeling. Usually it's the finishing touches that complete a look.

If you love vintage, romantic, bohemian, mixed with a classic touch of the Audrey Hepburn - this is your place for inspiration. Darling and daring.

Through photography, (and hopefully some artful brilliance!) I wish to leave you feeling that you too can master your style, and show you how. Fashion is about taking risks and sometimes making mistakes. We’ve all looked back on those photos with a smirk, and hey, that’s ok! That’s part of the adventure.

Fashion is always evolving, and in a sense, finding your style is a journey all of it’s own.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy!
