Summertime State Of Mind

Jessica Wagner

Red Maxi Dress: Celebration of Summer

Hey babes! I am feeling extra thankful

This past week brought some much needed rest. The kids and I got to spend some unplanned time up at the lake (hence this post being a bit delayed) and I am reeeecharged. It’s amazing what a little sunshine, fresh air and freedom from the day-to-day can do to negotiate a cold away and bring about virtuous relaxation.

I’ve said it before, but I am a summertime girl. There is something about the slow passing of time and the simple pleasures it brings: the sound of waves gently lapping on the shore, the taste of a home-grown strawberry plucked off the vine, and the psychedelic sunsets painted in the late evening skies. It ALL makes me smile.

I put my phone away for most of the days. I didn’t mind a strict schedule. I allowed myself an afternoon siesta (or two.) Guess what? It equaled lots of unbound bliss.

I’m pretty sure I could spend forever watching clouds pass in the gleaming sunshine, listening to a thunderstorm rolling in, or chasing moonlight on the warm breeze of an open sea. We got to do all of these things in the last couple days, PLUS we rode around our little beach community in Papa’s golf cart like some kind of crazy celeb royalty, waving to every passer-by. It was FUN. Add in a couple chilled bottles of rosé Summer Water and rendezvous via the boat, and you pretty much have my ideal lifestyle. #beachlife

To celebrate summer and taking things SLOW I want to share a few appropriate quotes that are inspiring my current summertime-state-of-mind goals.

Life, now, was unfolding before me, constantly and visibly, like the flowers of summer that drop fanlike petals on eternal soil. Overall, I was happiest to be alone; for it was then I was most aware of what I possessed. Free to look out over the rooftops of the city. Happy to be alone in the company of friends, the company of lovers and strangers. Everything, I decided, in this life, was pure pleasure.
— Roman Payne, Rooftop Soliloquy

At these times, the things that troubled her seemed far away and unimportant: All that mattered was the hum of the bees and the chirp of birdsong, the way the sun gleamed on the edge of a blue wildflower.
— Alison Croggon, The Naming

I almost wish we were butterflies and lived but three summer days—three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.
— John Keats
Overhead hung a summer sky furrowed with the rush of rockets; and from the east a late moon, pushing up beyond the lofty bend of the coast, sent across the bay a shaft of brightness which paled to ashes in the red glitter of the illuminated boats.
— Edith Wharton, The House of Mirth

Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people. For those few months, you’re not required to be who everyone thinks you are, and that cut-grass smell in the air and the chance to dive into the deep end of a pool give you a courage you don’t have the rest of the year. You can be grateful and easy, with no eyes on you, and no past. Summer just opens the door and lets you out.
— Deb Caletti, Honey, Baby, Sweetheart

It was rapture enough just to sit there beside him in silence, alone in the summer night in the white splendor of moonshine, with the wind blowing down on them out of the pine woods.
— L.M. Montgomery, The Blue Castle
The morning heat had already soaked through the walls, rising up from the floor like a ghost of summers past.
— Erik Tomblin, Riverside Blues

Summer set lip to earth’s bosom bare; And left the flushed print in a poppy there: Like a yawn of fire from the grass it came, And the fanning wind puffed it to flapping flame.
— Francis Thompson, "The Poppy"

Summers had a logic all their own and they always brought something out in me. Summer was supposed to be about freedom and youth and no school and possibilities and adventure and exploration. Summer was a book of hope. That’s why I loved and hated summers. Because they made me want to believe.
— Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
— John Lubbock, The Use Of Life

Summers were always our favorite times; we would eat outdoors under the shade of a tree. After having our fill of food and laughter, we’d pluck ripe figs right off the trees, peel and eat them until the sun disappeared into the blue. I can still taste those summer days, and will always do everything in my power to re-create them.
— Adriana Trigiani, Rococo: A Novel
All in all, it was a never to be forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.
— L.M. Montgomery, Anne's House of Dreams

Delft Blue Dress: Taking Inspiration From Delftware

Jessica Wagner

The Summer Maxi Dress

Laaaaaaaaadies! This one is for you.

Upcoming travels or celebratory festivities? Have a summer wedding to attend? This could be your “go to” dress. Fresh, ethereal and perfect for all warm-weather occasions.

You’re welcome. ;)

It seems that blue and white never really go out of style. I love a beautiful dress that hits all the high notes. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you but blue is definitely one of my favorite colors to wear. I like it in absolutely all its shades and forms.

This delicate blue ivory print feels inspired by Delftware ceramics.

Have you ever heard of Delftware

According to Vogue, Valentino himself used Delft Blue in a design for his own Fall 1968 collection that propelled him into the national spotlight as a celebrity fashion designer. How’s that for some fashion history?

17th century Dutch craftsmen (obsessed with the Ming Dynasty porcelain that was then being imported from China) saw a market for less expensive versions, and Delftware pottery was born.

Blue and white-painted china can be found everywhere, pouring out of small vintage storefronts. It’s hard to imagine antique shops without this lovely form of ceramics.

Found the Tinman passing through on his way to Emerald City.

I find Delftware incredibly charming (my favorite teacup is a Delft Blue!) So when I stopped in Top Knot Boutique (@shoptkb) a couple weeks ago to scope their goods in person, I was immediately enchanted with this blue porcelain maxi.

Let’s tick the boxes shall we?

  • Vintage-inspired update of the quintessential prairie dress
  • Super soft breezy blend with a dainty floral motif
  • Ruffled fluttery details and the off-the-shoulder neckline
  • Distinctly modern femininity in a classic silhouette

In person, the pattern is even reminiscent of the Cuban Spanish / Moroccan or talavera tiles from my favorite travel spot down in Mexico, but I still feel so very Dutch wearing it.

Have you ever bought clothing inspired by your travels?

I love how long column/maxi dresses can be styled on the more casual side. You can pair them with sandals and throw your hair up in a bun. It’s the epitome of that effortless summer style. I’m looking forward to styling this one for a date night or my next garden party.

Jessica Wagner

Wearing TKB  Floral Tank & Blush Open Toe Heel Booties

Summer trends go way beyond floral, although I must admit I love blending in with a wildflower garden.

Allow me to introduce you to Top Knot Boutique, an affordable online boutique, currated by my friends and fellow busy mamas who are on a mission to help women balance life’s many roles with fashionable ease.

I’m so smitten!

Top Knot hits that sweet spot when it comes to comfort and clothing for morning, noon, and night. Laid-back, cute and easy. They carry the softest everyday pieces that brilliantly transition from work to weekend. What I love about boutique style clothing is the attention to detail. They make it easy for you to find an item that has my three musts: affordable, exclusive, and compliment worthy.

Top Knot has a great selection of slouchy tops with artful touches, timeless dresses that are so very much of the times, and that unexpected tomboy-sexy that will elevate your outfit top-knot ballerina bun and all!

Scroll on to see my selection of the ones that I’m keeping on my list of “must buys” for summer/vacation holiday 2017 and let me know which trend is your favorite!

Stripes

What is a summer trend forecast without beloved stripes?! This season the print comes in all forms, but my favorites are in contrasting blue and white hues!

This open-shoulder top with little bell sleeves is sure to make you belle of the BBQ! I’m already planning a vineyard picnic with this sweet fitting cutie in mind. So easy. I paired mine with cream and lace shorts, but any type of denim would work just as seamlessly.

Wearing TKB first look exclusive! (Keep an eye out for this is a soon-to-be new arrival!)

Ruffles

Shoulder baring tops have taken to the next-level with a few ultra femme and frilly touches.

The color of clementines, peaches, and tangerines, this darling top will make a summer glow sing. Doll it up with a skirt, or pair it down with dark-wash high waisted denim, this look is grown up and girlie.

Blush Pink

The new neutral.

These knotted mule sneaks are the ultimate summer companion. Way to combine super comfy, supportive and adorable, TKB!  All in a shade that leans towards the earthier end of the pink pallet - that hint of warmth makes them subtle enough to wear with all! (Only $25!)

Distressed

I’ve been seeing this trend everywhere and am so drawn to the disregarded edginess of it. I do find it a little tricky – the distressing has to be done just right  – or this look can come across disheveled. This one has a high-low vented hem with a tattered design. The soft pink color and oversize comfy distressing hit all the right places!

Look 2:

I had to style this distressed top two ways (I just like it so much) – above, with heels to show you guys how easy it can be to style something like this up, and one with my sneaks and the dreamiest TKB kimono. This kimono might be one of my favorite pieces in the shop. It can be worn as a swim cover up, or to add a light layer of interest. The sheer shades of pink, tassels and the teal accent trim are on point!

Graphic Statements/Slogans

Unless you’ve living under a rock, you should know by now that wordy tees  are absolutely everywhere. From subtle word stitching to instagram friendly “hashtags” this trend is hard not to mention.

I am in love with this tank. It has ALL the good vibes! The fit is so cool – it’s cut to flatter. Just right for that “little to no effort look.” I know that’s how I like to get dressed!

(TKB also carries cute slogan baseball caps and hats. They have some new arrivals I can’t wait to get my hands on!)
