Dresses: It’s All In The {Pretty Little} Details

I’ve been on an über femme kick lately, and nothing is daintier than a scalloped edge detail.

Scallop hems are finding their way all over summer wear. The simple addition of a scalloped piece to your outfit invokes visions of sunshine-filled city strolls and sandy beaches.

The best part about this versatile look? It doesn’t matter what your body type. There are endless types of scalloped silhouettes that are cut to flatter. Dress them up or dress them down, scalloped edges instantly elevate any outfit.

Two tips when going for a noteworthy hem line. Choose a dress in a solid color and a modern cut. It plays off the whole “less is more” ideology, and nothing is more classic than a LBD with girlish edge. (Ha ha ha – ho ho ho literally!)

Scalloped fashion just screams summertime! Here are three scalloped styles from TOBI that will carry you through the next heat wave - preppy and polished.

Scalloped LBD:

This halter style stunner looks just as first-class with black strappy heels, as it does paired down for an in-the-heat-of-summer casual night out.

Pearl slides and a straw topper have been my go-to add on accessories this season. They give this oh-so-cute skater dress it’s own #mood. Something about the open back scallops is a little Audrey Hepburn-ish, no? (Perhaps a younger and cheekier take on the LBD queen.) This dress is on sale (!) and also comes in blush pink and cherry red.

Whenever my summer tan kicks in I don’t mind taking my skirts a little shorter, (thanks to spanks!) and find the leggy freedom all-around marvels and every bit alluring.

While summer calls for simple white dresses, when you find a shade that makes your summer glow sing you have to.

This wavy pretty little detail is giving me major 90s vibes with it’s structured crop. While I have been a little on the fence with this revival, I love that you can dress up this two piece set with a pair of playful heels or go “West Coast” with a more laid back attitude.

The soft color and double scallop trim are street-cute without even trying. Be prepared to see a lot more of this Lack of Color hat, as I am currently channeling my inner Pretty Women.

This little set also comes in 4 brilliant colors. Shop it below.

Rose Shift

A dress that matches my current wine obsession? Yes way! I can just picture sipping some bubbly at brunch or a daytime celebration in this sweet and easy one-and-done.

Really you can wear this style cut anywhere, anytime. Day to night, work to play. The loose drapey fit allows you to actually order more than one mimosa at brunch (yay!) and the sweetly scalloped hem and sleeve, make for a sophisticated combo.

This dress comes in seven shades and each as positivly dandy as the next! (I’ll take one of each!)

All of these dresses are available to shop (and on sale) at TOBI. If you are into brilliant prices, trending pieces, and pretty little details, you need to go check them out (they have an amazing insta account here too!) And don’t be afraid to try this cute and edgy detail on everything from your sunnies, sandals, sundresses and shorts!

Summertime State Of Mind

Red Maxi Dress: Celebration of Summer

Hey babes! I am feeling extra thankful

This past week brought some much needed rest. The kids and I got to spend some unplanned time up at the lake (hence this post being a bit delayed) and I am reeeecharged. It’s amazing what a little sunshine, fresh air and freedom from the day-to-day can do to negotiate a cold away and bring about virtuous relaxation.

I’ve said it before, but I am a summertime girl. There is something about the slow passing of time and the simple pleasures it brings: the sound of waves gently lapping on the shore, the taste of a home-grown strawberry plucked off the vine, and the psychedelic sunsets painted in the late evening skies. It ALL makes me smile.

I put my phone away for most of the days. I didn’t mind a strict schedule. I allowed myself an afternoon siesta (or two.) Guess what? It equaled lots of unbound bliss.

I’m pretty sure I could spend forever watching clouds pass in the gleaming sunshine, listening to a thunderstorm rolling in, or chasing moonlight on the warm breeze of an open sea. We got to do all of these things in the last couple days, PLUS we rode around our little beach community in Papa’s golf cart like some kind of crazy celeb royalty, waving to every passer-by. It was FUN. Add in a couple chilled bottles of rosé Summer Water and rendezvous via the boat, and you pretty much have my ideal lifestyle. #beachlife

To celebrate summer and taking things SLOW I want to share a few appropriate quotes that are inspiring my current summertime-state-of-mind goals.

Life, now, was unfolding before me, constantly and visibly, like the flowers of summer that drop fanlike petals on eternal soil. Overall, I was happiest to be alone; for it was then I was most aware of what I possessed. Free to look out over the rooftops of the city. Happy to be alone in the company of friends, the company of lovers and strangers. Everything, I decided, in this life, was pure pleasure.
— Roman Payne, Rooftop Soliloquy

At these times, the things that troubled her seemed far away and unimportant: All that mattered was the hum of the bees and the chirp of birdsong, the way the sun gleamed on the edge of a blue wildflower.
— Alison Croggon, The Naming

I almost wish we were butterflies and lived but three summer days—three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.
— John Keats
Overhead hung a summer sky furrowed with the rush of rockets; and from the east a late moon, pushing up beyond the lofty bend of the coast, sent across the bay a shaft of brightness which paled to ashes in the red glitter of the illuminated boats.
— Edith Wharton, The House of Mirth

Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people. For those few months, you’re not required to be who everyone thinks you are, and that cut-grass smell in the air and the chance to dive into the deep end of a pool give you a courage you don’t have the rest of the year. You can be grateful and easy, with no eyes on you, and no past. Summer just opens the door and lets you out.
— Deb Caletti, Honey, Baby, Sweetheart

It was rapture enough just to sit there beside him in silence, alone in the summer night in the white splendor of moonshine, with the wind blowing down on them out of the pine woods.
— L.M. Montgomery, The Blue Castle
The morning heat had already soaked through the walls, rising up from the floor like a ghost of summers past.
— Erik Tomblin, Riverside Blues

Summer set lip to earth’s bosom bare; And left the flushed print in a poppy there: Like a yawn of fire from the grass it came, And the fanning wind puffed it to flapping flame.
— Francis Thompson, "The Poppy"

Summers had a logic all their own and they always brought something out in me. Summer was supposed to be about freedom and youth and no school and possibilities and adventure and exploration. Summer was a book of hope. That’s why I loved and hated summers. Because they made me want to believe.
— Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
— John Lubbock, The Use Of Life

Summers were always our favorite times; we would eat outdoors under the shade of a tree. After having our fill of food and laughter, we’d pluck ripe figs right off the trees, peel and eat them until the sun disappeared into the blue. I can still taste those summer days, and will always do everything in my power to re-create them.
— Adriana Trigiani, Rococo: A Novel
All in all, it was a never to be forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.
— L.M. Montgomery, Anne's House of Dreams

Sweet As A Georgia Peach

Jessica Wagner

The Day Tripper One-Piece Swimsuit

This weekend we are heading to the lake to celebrate the 4th of July. I can not wait!

I was sick (again) this past week. My energy and usually happy-go-lucky outlook at an all time low… whooooo gets a cold in the summer?! So I’ve been trying to reel it in, take it slow. BUT – I must say, I’m so ready for fireworks under the stars, family BBQs and laughs shared around the campfire (and maybe a trip to the local fruit farm to pick up more of these mouth-watering peaches! They would be divine sitting on the edge of a day-drink or two!)

Lake time also means beach time, which also means: SWIM TIME! I can’t be the only one who gets excited about playing in the water?! I am SO game for jumping off the boat, riding the jet ski (Laura Croft style,) kayaking in the morning mist, and flinging the kids from the swan float in one pounce! This means I get super excited when I find quite possibly THE most perfect swimsuit brand known to womankind.

Swimsuit shopping is probably one of my favorites… and least favorites. It’s hard to strip down and take a long look in the mirror and not critique – I actually avoid the “what my head in the mirror says” and go with what feels cute and comfortable.

Each summer I like to indulge in one new luxury piece of quality swimwear. I have a drawer full suits that are mostly for fun, and over all inexpensive. I like to keep a few around for weekends on the boat, and for when we hang out at my parents hot tub come winter. While expensive swimwear might not be in everyone’s budget, I say it’s ok the splurge when you find one that makes you feel fabulous (and let’s you bend over and to fill up the kids beach bucket for the 1,000th time.)

Have you heard of Albion Fit? Let me share.

I had my eye on this sweet suit since March and picked out as a Mother’s Day gift. It’s a bit more than I would usually shell out for a suit, but I will literally live in this all summer up at the lake (and in the backyard kiddie pool – lets be real.) It’s perfect for playing in the sand with the kids. Which makes me believe it must have been designed by a knowing mama. While I love regular swim bottoms for achieving maximum tan, I much prefer retro high waisted! They have that vintage flair and keep you feeling covered, while giving the illusion of long lean legs. What I especially adore about this suit is the higher neckline. Like I mentioned, it makes bending over, catching a wave, or chasing after a little one easy and carefree. Not to mention the darling print! Peach and white stripes with a clementine floral will make a summer glow sing. Add the double bow tie at the back and you’ve got that feminine feeling I love so much. Albion swimmer comes fully lined (with a built-in shelf bra) plus this one has a removable halter strap if you want to avoid tan lines. Cute and covered and just as every bit charming.

Albion has a beautiful selection of swimwear options that are flattering, uncomplicated, and fitness/leisure friendly. It’s practical! Which is not always my first choice! LOL, but I love when I find it in a garment that makes me feel gorgeous.

I can’t wait to ride out summer chasing those tropical sunsets in this chic and timeless one-piece.
