The Joy Of Wrapping Presents

Hey guys! So this post is a little late! It’s been a {winter} whirlwind around here! (You too?) So Friday night Rob and I had a date night in and enjoyed the wonderland from the cozy confines of our tree lit living room, sipping eggnog martinis and giggling (ok I was giggling) over my terrible signing voice and the fact that Rob is a better pressie-wrapper than me!

I love wrapping gifts! I think I love wrapping presents almost much as I love shopping for them. Actually, everyone loves gift-wrapping in my house. Wrapping pressies isn’t about precision, it’s about imagination! We all seem to get a vibrating excitement from making the package as fun as the present. This doesn’t always equal pretty paper and fancy bows, as technique is something that can be improved over time, (ahem-yes you can see me trying not to cringe when corners aren’t sharp!) but I love pulling out the big box of ribbon, twine and strings, and letting the kids get creative and funky. The best part is seeing how they are always so proud of their elfish work. (I know Santa would give them a 5 star rating on effort alone.)

In the past I have done a Christmas wrapping theme, but nothing too precise. I just find it delightfully fun to coordinate when shopping for wrap. From rustic and simple, to glitter and gold. Presents can be as much of the holiday decor as the tree and ornaments, so I say let’s make them extra pretty. I also love browsing Pinterest for gifty beautiful inspo.

I found this luxurious gift-wrap, by Sugar Paper at Target. I wanted to buy it all you guys! Haha, but that’s another thing I love about the wrapping trappings -you will use them again, so when you see a pattern or paper that speaks to you, go for it! I love the simply sophisticated look of this whole collection (blush pink and gold #swoon.)

Whether you like sparkly glitz, brown paper rustic, or over-the-top ornate, it’s fun to make gifts match the personality of the receiver. (Hence why I like keep all the above on hand!) This particular pressie is for my daughter, so I‘m going for pretty and clever. <3

As for labeling, a metallic, red, or black sharpie are great options, and if you want to one-up it a good calligraphy pen is a gifter's best friend. I love this one, with a double end size option, and no skill needed! This baby even makes my sloppy kid-ish handwriting look good!

Not sure where to venture outside of ribbons, and bows? There are so many brilliant ways to wrap a Christmas gift. Giftology 101: Try feathers, sprigs of eucalyptus, tiny silver bells, little ornaments, even bold stripes, furry texture, soft velvet, lace, or tiny clothes pins! If all else fails, brown paper and string is always charming and just as sure to delight. Keep in mind presents don’t have to be in a Christmas-y color or print. Pink, black and white, and even dinosaurs can be brought into the wrapping game if you get crafty. Speaking of crafty, craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels are my other favorite places for scoring affordable extras to go with the paper and bows. Before you know it, you will be wrapping presents like an artful gift stylist!

So while the Christmas countdown is on, if you can, make time for wrapping night (or date-night.) Keep it feeling special by getting all prettied up yourself. This cold shoulder velvet dress is so soft. It’s actually as cozy as my favorite pair of jammies, but made the night feel elevated, as opposed to every other night in. (Dress is from Ragazza, which you can read about here.) A bit of over-the-knee floral tights brought that extra “spark” and made me feel as prettified as the paper wrapped gifts. If you take your wrapping seriously, pull your hair back in a velvety red ribbon, as wielding scissors and drinking nog can be a dangerous combo! Turn on your favorite tunes, (mine is the She and Him Christmas vinyl!) sit under the Christmas lights, and get arty-crafty.

Boutique Shopping

“No thanks, I have enough clothes and shoes,” said no woman ever.

Shopping for some of us is like oxygen. We need it to live. It’s a way of life. Take us shopping, and we are yours.

For others it’s a means to an end.

Either way, we all need to wear clothes and have countless options as to where we spend our time and money.

While there’s nothing wrong with on-line and retail chain shopping (spoken like a true shopaholic) if you want a catered and joyful experience, look no further than your local shopping boutiques.

Boutiques are usually smaller “concept stores” that sell über stylish clothing, jewelry and other specialized accessories.  (The word boutique is French for “shop.”)

Since boutiques often evolve out of a founder's passion, they are a great resource for exclusive items. Not to mention, they boost an authentic environment to shop in. Often associated with a specialized service, boutiques offer a wide assortment of their niche product, which in turn allows you more choices. Knowing a shops’ sphere of expertise will allow you to easily navigate what it has to offer.

More recently I rediscovered the charm of shopping local, at Ragazza Boutique, known for their smart up-scale occasion dressing. The shop is tailored toward a lifestyle of “classic with a hip twist.”

*Fun fact: Ragazza, means "girlfriend" in Italian. The owner chose this name, aspiring to create a place friends would love to meet and shop together. (I mean don’t you just want to become a regular after knowing that?!)

Ragazza, like many boutiques caters to specialized styling, offers great brands and one-of-a-kind finds. Their quality is exquisite and the selection is all-embracing.

Boutique shopping is an upgraded experience not only in the la-di-da of discovering a look that no one else will have, but in the luxury of a shopping experience about YOU.

Take for example, Ragazza offers private wardrobe appointments, alterations, and a sales team of brand and product experts. Their profuse knowledge of their inventory pretty much guarantees they are equip to help you find an outfit that meets your needs.

Now, shopping at an uptown boutique like Ragazza, I expected to find elegant dresses and chic options for weddings, baby showers and business affairs, (see this post here) but what I didn’t expect to find was the same high-end customized fashion in their more casual weekend wear.

If there is one fashion item that never fails to call out its wearer as a genuine fashion-girl it’s the jumpsuit. I about died when the styling team at Ragazza pulled this jumper off the rack. It can substitute for a glamed-up gown or be dressed down street-style cool. From off-duty models, fashion editors and movie stars there’s a reason it-girls can’t get enough of this versatile one-piece.

It’s the ultimate lazy girl go-to. With this all-in-one ensemble at the heart of your outfit, all you need to think about are shoes, bag, and a few carefully considered accessories. It’s the go-anywhere outfit dreams are made of. Ragazza slayed it.

When you chose to shop local, not only are you supporting the heartbeat of your own neighborhood, but also you are helping your economy thrive. Plus, it’s a great way to love on your community! Shopping local is always in style. When you support small businesses, you’re supporting a dream. Shop small, support your friends or “la ragazzas!”

Nautical Prep

Happy Fourth of July weekend!

Summer is full of occasions that call for special dressing. From baby showers to BBQs, bring on the red, white, and blue and get ready to sail into high-summer season!

These classic colors translate nautical when styled in a clean-cut, polished fashion -- prep style at its core. This look calls for clean lines, high quality textiles, close fits and modest cuts. Add on few collegiate-style trademarks and you’re ready for the yacht club.

Cultivating a seaside preppy look requires a few principal details. More than a pastel polo or boat shoes, you want to present an aura of a privileged lifestyle. Anyone can pull these pieces together (privileged-elite or not) and they serve well for occasion dressing.

A good place to start is with your basic solids colors: white, black, navy, beige, as well as lime-green, yellow, or pink. Steer clear of anything too flashy, complicated or revealing. Oxford shirts, ballet flats, cable knits and tea length skirts are all your friends.

Continue building from there. Classic prints in gingham, seersucker, or (my favorite) stripes all are distinct was to pepper an outfit with a dapper feel. Drape sweaters, show off monograms, and balance out the stuffy with pearls and big bows. Lastly, don’t slouch. Stand up straight and carry yourself with an air of confidence. Need some inspiration? Look no further than lady liberty.

Know the places to shop like J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Lilly Pulitzer, (which just oozes summer time in the Hamptons) Lands End, and your local high-end shopping boutiques. Mirror old-school style icons like Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy who made this style what it is today. Want a more modern take? Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Blair Waldrof (aka Queen B) are all perfect examples of how to wear this look, prim and proper.

Preppy outfits not only look adorable, but are also comfortable to wear. Acquaint yourself with the shift dress. Nothing screams nautical prep like a New England inspired navy and red trim dress. Girlie, preppy and sophisticated.

A shift dress will carry you through interviews, nice lunches and dinners, business casual functions, hot dates, and so much more. The key to keeping this piece from looking stale is to freshen it up with well-balanced accessories. I paired mine with dark tortoiseshell sunglasses and an oversize clutch. Red-orange heels add a touch of whimsy, and play off the gold red trim back zipper. Try pairing one with Mary Jane heels, a long necklace and an easy up-do for a date night look. Also, don’t be afraid of pattern! You can always tone it down with a blazer or cute cardigan. This style should hit right at or slightly above the knee. Shift dresses are ideal for formal occasions because they're thick and structured, creating a flattering silhouette. Conservative enough for proper functions, short enough for play!

I found mine at local shopping boutique, Ragazza. High-end specialty shops can offer a huge selection of clothing boasting this aesthetic. Clean stripes, bold hues, upscale fabrics and bright trims.

Once you find your own swanky little number, hit the town happenings and parade your own shift dress looking flawless for every and any summer event.

Hope you and your family have the happiest of holidays!
