A Modern Take On Corsets

Jessica Wagner

Weekend Uniform {Elevated}

When I saw a casual corset top on the cover of Porter magazine's Spring 2017 issue I fell in love with Natalia Vodianova, her Chloé top, and Isabel Marant belt. On a mission to recreate this chic combo, I jumped out of my seat when I came across a similar piece at Zara for under $30. Of course I didn't buy it and it sold out! Luck has it; the eyelet-fastening top came back in stock (and still is available in all sizes!) I can't get enough of this elevated version of the white tee.

The corset is back, but not in the traditional way you're thinking – it’s being used in a street-style friendly way - cinched over a midi dress or an oversized shirt. While this garment constrained waists in the 1800s, it’s being used today for fashion purposes. (Plus, it seriously does keeps your waist in check. I am pretty straight up and down and this top made me feel like a curvacious Marilyn Monroe!)

What I love about this particular top, is it's all one piece. It's a great option for styling if you don't have a lace up corset, or the thought of styling one is intimidating. It’s a wardrobe piece that still defines femininity brought up-to-date when layered over other clothing. So, yeah, it’s actually a little tricky.

A few key points to rocking this look. Keep your makeup minimal and hair a bit “un-done.” Stick to a monochromatic color pallet. Mind the structure of the rest of your outfit – balance out the tight corset with other layers. Overal the best advice is, keep it simple. (If you need more inspo Pinterest is a goldmine and Zara has a ton of other corset options.)

I viewed this top as a chance to elevate my weekend usual – I switched out my plain tee for the lace-up corset belt, my white sneaks for my pointed white mules and layered on a white blazer instead of my duster (last seen here.) Oh, and don't forget your third piece!

The best part of elevating a regular look? A new bag for spring! I picked up this neutral tote from J&G and they are offering all my followers a special 15% off discount with the code "WEEKENDER15" at checkout!! (Shop all their handbags here.) I was on the hunt for a new "everyday bag" and picked the Madison Tote for it's metal hardware, medium size and structure. I have been looking for just the right bag to swap out from winter to spring and this is "it" for sure! So easy pair with everything, and sturdy enough to handle day-to-day use.

While not all of the trends we see at fashion week make it to mainstream, every year a handful of them do. This season, that standout look is the corset. Give it a try, and know you won’t have to be shy when going for that extra fry! :)

The Coolest Loafers Of The Season

Menswear inspired clothing is at it’s best when paired with relaxed, feminine details.

These luxury Gucci loafers have been around for some time (have you seen these ones?) While this style may be nothing new, these particular slides feature a rosy floral embroidery that feels perfect for spring.

When I spotted this pair (at Forever 21 of all places) I had to give them a try. (Alas, this may be the closest I will come to owning the actual high-end set.) This was a definite save, as the splurge was just not in my relative future.

When it comes to fast-fashion vs. luxury brands, weigh your decisions carefully. While I have been lusting after the real deal, I rather save my pennies for a classic Chanel purse or something that I know won’t be off-trend in a few months. That’s not to say you shouldn’t invest in a quality loafer, but you might want to pass on the added details that may not withstand the test of time. The great thing about finding a similar style to a high-end look is that you can stay within your budget. This really allows you to go for a test-drive. Before investing in luxury pieces, say sunglasses for example, spec out a similar pair at a lower price point and see how much you really love them/wear them. Nobody wants those shopping regret blues!

For this outfit, in terms of going for a minimalistic boyish look, I layered my new-found loafers with a men’s vintage tweed overcoat and it’s seriously one of my favorite pieces. Personally, I have found this style hard to come by. Tweed blazers seem to be more abundant in options than the longer jacket style for women, but this coat is such an easy, smart layer any time of year. This one has been in my closet a long time, and shows some wear but I think that’s part of the charm! When searching for one of your own, don’t be afraid to look in the men’s (or little boys!) section.

Keeping it feeling femme with a hint of lace. A white button up shirt can make a subtle sexy play when paired with an eyelash bralette. Button downs should be slightly fitted through the body and hit below the waist. Tuck in the front, for a loose look.

As for the rest, try a slouchy handbag and retro feeling shades. The '90s are here to stay, so why not try a pair of slim oval lenses?

Dark-wash, raw-hem jeans, with an exposed ankle are still rounding out my favorite style denim, and keep it weekend-friendly.

As for hair: casual, effortless, elegance. I can’t wait to share with you guys how my experience using HairStory’s New Wash the last month has been going, but spoiler alert: I am loving my hair and having more fun with it in it’s natural state than I thought possible. Somehow I think we are brainwashed to believe if we don’t spend a certain amount of time tweaking our hair it doesn’t look good, and that’s just not true! I’m so used to having to curl and get those coveted “beach waves” that don’t come easy unless I invest a chunk of time to getting them just so. I have been washing, air-drying and leaving it natural and straight with the help of two other HairStory products, their Hair Balm and Dressed Up lotion. They give it subtle texture and I love running my fingers through it or pinning it up in a “real girl” bun. For some reason I’ve always felt self-conscious about my hair being “flat” or looking “boring” - if that’s the right word. I think my hair is also enjoying the freedom. (Anyway, full post and review to come!)

With Spring close at hand, I am ready to trade in my winter shoes for easy slip-on styles (and as we are about to go see Beauty and the Beast -favorite childhood Dinsney movie- there is no better time to add some rose -themed floral embroidery to your repertoire!)  Ever appropriate for that allure of apparent effortlessness. Relaxed and easy as Coca-Cola in a bottle (not Diet.)

Holiday Jewels

Accessories are the best. By switching them up you’ll be sure to have something to wear to you 100+ holiday parties! It’s the easiest way to elevate an outfit. Ever notice how adding even one necklace can change your whole look? Instant glam can be achieved in a white tee and jeans, by adding a touch of sparkle and glitz.

A lot of what I write about for this blog focuses on building a classic wardrobe by investing in key pieces you can wear long term, but maintaining a distinct style is achieved with fashion forward or fun and quirky accessories. Jewelry is all about personality. By keeping your accessories, or what I like to call “third piece,” (post here) up to date you are sure to have something to wear to all your holiday soirees. Tis’ the season to be triple booked!

Jewelry can be an instant mood-lifter. Colorful, sparkly, superfun. Have you heard the term “arm party?”  Try incorporating a few new pieces each season. It can be an inexpensive way to keep your wardrobe feeling fab and fresh.

Mix high and low, trendy and classic. Spice it up with the latest on-point styles, but invest every so often in exquisite everyday pieces that make you feel good. For example, Stella & Dot’s  Covet line or their custom engraveable options.

Amid the whirlwind of the holidays, it can be easy to skim over the little details, but sometimes the most intriguing pieces and gifts, are the smallest. Outfit ornaments are the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Earrings, bracelets, and necklaces make this season’s best looks complete. Stella & Dot’s latest style options sure to please both the minimalists and maximalists among us.

Ok -- let’s break it down! Stella & Dot holiday style.

HOLIDAY PARTY: Sparkly, Minimal, Trendy
The doorbell’s ringing non-stop, there is standing room only, and the battle of the playlists is about to begin. It’s party time! This leather and gold collar is all things minimal and chic, while the second layer of silver and gold will keep your look poppin’ all night long. This statement necklace can be worn 5 different ways (see Movie Night look below for full piece.) It can be taken down long, loose and laid back or clasped up, as seen here, for a party making entrance.

MOVIE NIGHT: Stacked, Mixed Metals, Statement
Laid back sophistication with an edgy rock ‘n’ roll attitude. The answer to “hmmm what should I wear tonight?” This look has you covered from the movies to the fancy-shmancy cocktail party to the un-schmancy dive bar afterwards. This combo can elevate any plain tee or graphic top. Don’t be afraid to stack it up, arms and neck. I love the Electra statement necklace for it’s vintage silver plating and gradient jet black to clear sparkle. Add in a leather jacket to compliment your bold statement of metal mixology.

GIRLS NIGHT: Dangle, Layered, Elevated
If you add one new piece of jewelry to your wardrobe this winter, it should be a lariat necklace. This style is awesome for layering and looks good with everything. Let is dangle against a low cut slip dress or double it up on against a silky soft fabric. You can wrap this piece so many ways, or even tie it in a knot! I love the around-the-neck chocker-option. Tie it in your hair, or use it was a belt with a flowy dress. Here it's paired with a few dainty necklaces, and a luxe leopard clutch. This look is perfect for a weekend gift swap with girlfriends (including your very dearest friend – wine.)

It’s in the written in the stars. Smokey sparkle and gunmetal details with a chic bowed ribbon are all you need for a magical start to the New Year. The embroidered Emme choker can be worn as a lariat, wrapped around your wrist as a bracelet, or even swept up in your hair as a headband. This quick-change piece is perfect for a flurry of holiday festivities. Layer in hints of sparkle with the delicate celestial choker, and dreamy Luna crescent. The starlet in you will be black tie ready for cheers and (and maybe a midnight kiss) this NYE.
