Gingham Skirt & Blue Sky Rooftops

Dress Up Your Weekend {But Keep It Chill}

It feels like summer over here on The Weekender

Lately I’ve been feeling inspired by times of nostalgia and innocence.

Clean simplistic lines and a refined sense of girlish style. Flirty tops and breezy skirts. Gingham, floral motifs, and anything in a shade of rosé are invading my closet. Take these daisy print sunnies and crochet top – creative with a quirky charm all their own.

Today’s editorial was a serendipitous event. We were headed downtown planning to shoot a very different feel to this look, but due to unexpected traffic from other events had to relocate.

So, we headed to the top of the rooftop parking lot where we found ourselves alone- soaking in the sunshine and blue skies. The wind worked with us (for once!) and it might be the chicest outfit you can think of wearing on an abandoned rooftop.

I picked up this vintage parasol at a little antique shop by the lake for $6. It spoke to me. (I mean anything in this shade of pink speaks to me.) It’s the real deal you guys. It just feels like there is some dreamy romantic story behind the intricate curled handle and pretty scalloped edges. It’s in great shape too! I am dying to know the tale of the previous owner. (Me being idyllic - when probably it just sat in a back closet or some attic for the last so many years.)

By the way, have you heard, have you heard? Gingham is THE print of this summer. It’s no surprise that I’ve been wearing this gingham skirt since I picked it up (another vintage find – but local this time – House of Dow) with just about anything. It’s the perfect excuse to wear gingham non-stop with my summer tees, tanks and graphic tops without looking boring.

Talking about current addictions… besides millennial pink hair, daisy print and a chilled 4 pack of Babe Rosé (with bubbles) these Noonday Collection Parlor Earrings are the tops. They deserve an award for creative versatility. They can be styled 4 ways – a simple gold stud, dressed up with an extender or ear jacket or the full look. I just can’t deal with how cool they are. You can literally wear a bed sheet and as long as you’ve got these earrings on, you will be the chicest person in the room. Seriously, you should try it! I love how they light up when the sunshine hits them just right. I’m also wearing a Noonday necklace made of artillery from Ethiopia, with a moving story behind it (read here) and these gorge bangles are a wardrobe staple! They come in a set of 5. Every woman should have a neutral stack of bangles in her jewelry box. The largest one is made with natural Mother of Pearl!

***Don't forget, June is an extra special month, as a portion of all Noonday Collection sales support the giveback impact and social needs in HaitiNoonday is hoping to raise enough funds to build a mother and daughter a home. I can’t think of a better reason to elevate your summer look!

There are a few other telltale signs of oncoming summer -these things that make me exited: a sun kissed glowlonger days and campfire nights, the relaxation of enjoying a grilled meal outside on the patio and the anticipation of planning a vacation or weekend get-away. After editing this shoot I am lusting for an adventure with real castle backdrops on a bustling coastline. Where do you plan to travel this season? If I could go anywhere it would be France!

On that note, I am off to get ready for a wedding, as the kids are with Mimi and Papa! YAY! (Pop the champagne!)

I wish you all the loveliest weekend! You can find me on the dance floor. :)

Nautical Prep

Happy Fourth of July weekend!

Summer is full of occasions that call for special dressing. From baby showers to BBQs, bring on the red, white, and blue and get ready to sail into high-summer season!

These classic colors translate nautical when styled in a clean-cut, polished fashion -- prep style at its core. This look calls for clean lines, high quality textiles, close fits and modest cuts. Add on few collegiate-style trademarks and you’re ready for the yacht club.

Cultivating a seaside preppy look requires a few principal details. More than a pastel polo or boat shoes, you want to present an aura of a privileged lifestyle. Anyone can pull these pieces together (privileged-elite or not) and they serve well for occasion dressing.

A good place to start is with your basic solids colors: white, black, navy, beige, as well as lime-green, yellow, or pink. Steer clear of anything too flashy, complicated or revealing. Oxford shirts, ballet flats, cable knits and tea length skirts are all your friends.

Continue building from there. Classic prints in gingham, seersucker, or (my favorite) stripes all are distinct was to pepper an outfit with a dapper feel. Drape sweaters, show off monograms, and balance out the stuffy with pearls and big bows. Lastly, don’t slouch. Stand up straight and carry yourself with an air of confidence. Need some inspiration? Look no further than lady liberty.

Know the places to shop like J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Lilly Pulitzer, (which just oozes summer time in the Hamptons) Lands End, and your local high-end shopping boutiques. Mirror old-school style icons like Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy who made this style what it is today. Want a more modern take? Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Blair Waldrof (aka Queen B) are all perfect examples of how to wear this look, prim and proper.

Preppy outfits not only look adorable, but are also comfortable to wear. Acquaint yourself with the shift dress. Nothing screams nautical prep like a New England inspired navy and red trim dress. Girlie, preppy and sophisticated.

A shift dress will carry you through interviews, nice lunches and dinners, business casual functions, hot dates, and so much more. The key to keeping this piece from looking stale is to freshen it up with well-balanced accessories. I paired mine with dark tortoiseshell sunglasses and an oversize clutch. Red-orange heels add a touch of whimsy, and play off the gold red trim back zipper. Try pairing one with Mary Jane heels, a long necklace and an easy up-do for a date night look. Also, don’t be afraid of pattern! You can always tone it down with a blazer or cute cardigan. This style should hit right at or slightly above the knee. Shift dresses are ideal for formal occasions because they're thick and structured, creating a flattering silhouette. Conservative enough for proper functions, short enough for play!

I found mine at local shopping boutique, Ragazza. High-end specialty shops can offer a huge selection of clothing boasting this aesthetic. Clean stripes, bold hues, upscale fabrics and bright trims.

Once you find your own swanky little number, hit the town happenings and parade your own shift dress looking flawless for every and any summer event.

Hope you and your family have the happiest of holidays!
