Ice Shove : A Free Woman On Top of The World

With the Women's March happening this weekend, it seemed like a good time remind the world THE FUTURE IS FEMALE! I am all-in for supporting female empowerment with this sporty tee by L’ecole Des Femmes. It's a stretchy cotton-blend with bold red graphics that will help you practice your French - “a free woman.”

I seriously felt the part scaling the giant wall of ice that formed this week in Port Clinton, Ohio during the perfect mix of wind and temps that created an "ice shove." Some piles were up to 40 feet high!

This shoot might be my favorite cold-weather adventure we've ever had. It was incredible to explore these gigantic forms on Lake Erie at our favorite summer spot. I’ve been visiting this place since I was a little kid. It was so surreal to see the beach transformed into a frozen arctic wall.

I'm more of a warm weather adventurer but my wanderlust kicked in when we saw the scale and magnitude of the natural ice forms. We knew it was worth bundling up the kids and driving out before the temps transform them back into puddles.

Of course I was embarrassing the kids and singing "Frozen" at the top of my lungs - {let it gooo!!!} like a kid myself. ;)

It was almost 40 degrees out which made it extra slippery, so I was nervous letting the kids scoot around on the ice, but at least 60+ people were also out and about taking photos, sliding down the ice walls and enjoying the sunshine. I'm so happy we got to explore the phenomenon in person.

There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.

I am so proud of what women everywhere have accomplished this year. Here's to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.

Noonday Collection + Giveaway

School's out and summer is upon us! Time to layer on the sunscreen and accessories!

You know when you hear a story that gives you the chills (and maybe a few tears spring into your eyes?) That’s how it is with April, an ambassador for Noonday Collection (check her out on Facebook here.) We sat over coffee and she shared the most beautiful stories of how Noonday is using fashion to create meaningful opportunities around the world.

Noonday Collection is a fair trade fashion and design company known for their extraordinary handcrafted pieces and the heartwarming stories behind the artisans who create them.

Their jewelry reminds me a lot of the unique and creative styles you find at Anthropologie – one of my all-time favorite places to shop. It has a sense of urbane adventure – and is majorly fashionable without feeling like it’s just following the latest trends.

How cool is this ~ Noonday partners with artisan entrepreneurs in vulnerable communities globally. They help artisans develop businesses through fair trade, and empower them to grow sustainably. Noonday is on a mission to create dignified jobs for people who need them, and in turn, they are building a flourishing world where children are cherished, women are empowered, and people can perform meaningful jobs.

April reached out to me in hopes of spreading news about their fab jewelry, as well as the genuine honest work opportunities Noonday is creating for those who may otherwise be facing poverty, gender violence, human trafficking and HIV/AIDS.

When ambassadors like April showcase Noonday and style their friends, customers can create a growing marketplace for the global artisan businesses. By hosting a Noonday Collection trunk show, you can help change the lives of the artisans right from your own home. Your local ambassador will share stories of the artisans and help pick out a piece or two specific to your style, all while having fun with your friends.

When artisans have good jobs where they earn reliable, fair and sustainable incomes, they are empowered to provide for their families and experience renewed hope for the future.

Many of these entrepreneurs hire people in their communities who may otherwise be overlooked for jobs, including women, people living with disabilities and survivors of trafficking. Noonday ensures they pay fair wages, provide safe and healthy working conditions and prohibit child and forced labor.

Right now Noonday works with 29 artisan businesses in 12 countries around the world. You can read more about each of them and their personal stories here.

A note from Noonday Independent Ambassador, April:

"I've always been aware of social needs throughout our country and the world and it is a huge passion of mine. It is the main reason I decided to join Noonday. Since becoming an ambassador my eyes have been opened to how business can change communities. I never used to like giving power to money because it can be turned into greed. However, our purchasing power in the U.S. is unlike most throughout the world and THAT is powerful. If we all are more conscious about where we buy things that we already purchase, then we will create a flourishing world. So the next time you are shopping, go to a local boutique or farmers market and seek out the ethical and fair trade stores online. When we do this, we have the chance to be better together."

April was kind enough to share her pieces with me, and I am so excited to share some of my favorites from the collection with you!

PLUS, since June is an extra special month, a portion of all Noonday Collection sales support the giveback impact and social needs in Hati. Noonday is hoping to raise enough funds to build a mother and daughter a home. I can’t think of a better reason to elevate your summer look!

Agra Earrings

These cobalt beauties are made of leather and seed beads. Tassel earrings have been huge this season, and this pair is especially lightweight - making them easy to wear all day long!

Serenity Wrap Bracelet

I adore the colors in this piece! If you follow me, you know I am drawn to anything pink and blue! Made with glass beads and featuring a soft cotton tassel, the boho-femme vibes are strong in this dainty everyday bracelet.

Spectrum Cuff

This glass bead and leather cuff compliments any outfit with its rainbow of hues. It’s a great summer statement piece and comfortable to wear – a must when it comes to jewelry in my book.

La Bella Bag

I fell in love with this weekend-ready/carry-all bag the moment I saw it! The intricate embroidery and butter-soft leather is exquisite to touch. Made with hand woven wool, this bag is crafted by women in the rural regions surrounding Ayacucho, Peru. They work from their homes, allowing them to earn an income while caring for their children. They use traditional embroidery techniques and motifs that preserve their cultural heritage.

Romantic Leather Wallet

This earthy wallet is made entirely by hand by artisans in India. The stunning color palette and hand woven leather make for a truly special accessory to hold all your essentials.

Fringed Crescent Earrings

One of Noonday’s most loved styles, and one of my favorites from their collection! These are SO lightweight and look amazing with everything. Bold, easy and boho, these earrings are made with love in Hati, using upcycled metals like oil drums, allowing artisans to transform unwanted materials into something truly beautiful. The artisan business in Haiti empowers Haitians to pull themselves out of poverty through dignified work. Haiti is a country that has faced numerous challenges, from government instability to natural disasters. The artisan partners there are masters at creating beauty from the rubble and use their materials to their fullest potential.

Silver Steps WrapAzamad Cuff, Woven Dreams Bracelet

I love stacking bracelets, and these three just felt right together! The silver wrap and cuff are so great because you can adjust them to fit your wrist. The vibrant glass bead bracelet has a magnetic clasp, making it extra sturdy to wear.

Revelry Earrings

These navy and coral earrings are made in a vulnerable community in India, with leather and mixed metals. I seriously love how you can dress them up or down! And that they are empowering both men and women to provide for their families.

Messenger BraceletSet In Stone Cuff

Two more favorites here! Send a message with this gorgeous brass bracelet handcrafted by artisans from the slums of Kenya. Classic gold makes this piece endlessly wearable while the special hand-etched design makes it stand out from the crowd.

Dazzling amazonite and gorgeous abalone shell adorn a sweet brass open cuff for a style that will elevate any ensemble, made with love in Peru!

Paper Dreams Necklace, Firelight Orange

This simple paper bead necklace can be worn so many ways! And is an easy add-on to any outfit. Jalia and Daniel are social entrepreneurs in Uganda who share Noonday's dream of using fashion to create opportunity. They launched their business in 2010 and have created dignified work for hundreds of Artisans in their community. The Artisans gather every day to eat, laugh, and create together.

Alchemy Bracelets {3 Set} , Safari Stack Bracelet {Aqua}

This bracelet set is the perfect accessory for a casual look or something more glam. Perfect for an everyday arm party as well! The aqua paper bracelet is made in Uganda and comes in aqua salmon or teal.

Artifact Necklace

This ivory resin necklace is so chic – I love the gold strip down the middle - wear layered or on its own. The gold shimmer of fringe on this pendant is perfect for adding some length to your look.

The name Noonday Collection comes from Isaiah 58:10:

If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

I absolutely adore all of the collection. I wish I could let all of you see, touch, and try them on in person, but believe me, you can feel the love, care and craftsmanship built into each piece.

Fishnets

Jessica Wagner

How To Style Fishnets Like A Fashion Girl

Fishnets are one of those accessories you may have considered, only to decide you could never pull them off. Fair enough. These bad boys may be best known in traditional sense for being sexually suggestive, subversive even. Best left to flappers, punk rockers and Madonna. Which is the disquiet when giving this textile styling look a try.

A Brief History of Fishnets....
Fishnet stockings have an alluring history full of edgy ethos. Adding a hint of subtle sexuality, they became popular with flappers in the 1920’s as hemlines rose (to below the knee – gasp.) Punks of the 70s made them more extreme, with rips and tears. Then 80s pop goddess and fashion icon Madonna took the look to a whole new level by dressing in fishnet tops, gloves, and body suits. Come the 90s, fishnet became a normalized mainstay within the fashion realm.

The suggestive connotation of this garment has made it a symbol of “sex” but it has also served as a bit of an “F-YOU” to the male gaze. In some ways the fishnet stocking represents western culture’s obsession with the putting women in a box, sexually speaking. You are either a good girl or a bad girl. In sexual politics, women are often viewed as one or the other, limiting sexual expression, by only offering two exclusive ways to construct a sexual identity. (Prude/trashy, respected/desired.) Which is totally backwards. Fishnets are delightfully gratifying in that they show some skin, but don't reveal all, allowing women to play with this dichotomy on their own terms. Fashion should be about looking past labels (literally and figuratively) and breaking down stereotypes.

Today, these fashion-forward tights are having a major comeback in the street style scene, and all it takes is the right amount of inspiration to work them into your current wardrobe. Styled right, they become a mixture of mordern and cool. Isn’t that how fashion works? It takes a risky (or in this case risqué) fashion move and morphs it into a trend.

There are a few ways to approach fishnet tights to keep them looking current. One is to view them as an add-on accessory, letting them peak through your ripped jeans or showing off a few inches just above the waistline. (Done with a cropped top and high-rise bottoms.)

The other way is to let them be the focal point, keeping the punk vibes strong in a mini skirt with heavy boots for an outfit that is sure to turn heads.

Fishnets are an easy and inexpensive way to add a touch of tough of edge to your favorite dressed-down ensemble. (You can usually find them for under $10.) Plus, a netted layer does an amazing job of emphasizing curves and accentuating tone definition.

I went for a layering trifecta (read up on my third piece post here) with an oversized leopard print as my outerwear (à la Olsen twin) with a black long-line blazer, and a sweatshirt/tee combo. Keeping the look street-cool, with classic white sneaks and a slouchy beanie. (I literally grabbed this hat in the grocery store checkout lane one day. Ha! You never know where fashion inspiration may be lurking.)

Still not convinced? Scroll through Instagram, or pictures from fashion week around the world. You will see fishnets are indeed everywhere. Layered with cropped pants, letting the upper ankle make a subtle play, or with loafers for a ladylike twist.  Styled grunge, with a graphic tee and bold print jacket (as leopard and fishnet is never too much) or with a simple 90s slip dress. You can always take it a little softer in a white, nude or a pale color pallet, or even more delicate ankle socks. Play around with dimensions, as the design can be can be small diamonds or large-scale checks. The latter seems to own the fashion elite’s consensus.

If you are feeling inspired, the modern fishnet is all about taking a fashion risk with unexpected parings, so be bold. While the fishnet may appeal to the male gaze, it has always been a symbol of reclaimed female sexuality. Fishnets say: "I know you think I'm a tease, and I don't care." In other words, fishnets are all about female empowerment, which of course, is always in style.
