Delft Blue Dress: Taking Inspiration From Delftware

Jessica Wagner

The Summer Maxi Dress

Laaaaaaaaadies! This one is for you.

Upcoming travels or celebratory festivities? Have a summer wedding to attend? This could be your “go to” dress. Fresh, ethereal and perfect for all warm-weather occasions.

You’re welcome. ;)

It seems that blue and white never really go out of style. I love a beautiful dress that hits all the high notes. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you but blue is definitely one of my favorite colors to wear. I like it in absolutely all its shades and forms.

This delicate blue ivory print feels inspired by Delftware ceramics.

Have you ever heard of Delftware

According to Vogue, Valentino himself used Delft Blue in a design for his own Fall 1968 collection that propelled him into the national spotlight as a celebrity fashion designer. How’s that for some fashion history?

17th century Dutch craftsmen (obsessed with the Ming Dynasty porcelain that was then being imported from China) saw a market for less expensive versions, and Delftware pottery was born.

Blue and white-painted china can be found everywhere, pouring out of small vintage storefronts. It’s hard to imagine antique shops without this lovely form of ceramics.

Found the Tinman passing through on his way to Emerald City.

I find Delftware incredibly charming (my favorite teacup is a Delft Blue!) So when I stopped in Top Knot Boutique (@shoptkb) a couple weeks ago to scope their goods in person, I was immediately enchanted with this blue porcelain maxi.

Let’s tick the boxes shall we?

  • Vintage-inspired update of the quintessential prairie dress
  • Super soft breezy blend with a dainty floral motif
  • Ruffled fluttery details and the off-the-shoulder neckline
  • Distinctly modern femininity in a classic silhouette

In person, the pattern is even reminiscent of the Cuban Spanish / Moroccan or talavera tiles from my favorite travel spot down in Mexico, but I still feel so very Dutch wearing it.

Have you ever bought clothing inspired by your travels?

I love how long column/maxi dresses can be styled on the more casual side. You can pair them with sandals and throw your hair up in a bun. It’s the epitome of that effortless summer style. I’m looking forward to styling this one for a date night or my next garden party.

Statement Sleeves

Jessica Wagner

Floral Romper

Hello Spring! Bring on all the poetic dreamy pieces. The more lightweight and floral the better.

Super sleeves have been making a play in the fashion world since SS17 Fashion Week. (Dare I label them the fashion focus of 2017?) Runway designers all seem to agree on this one major trend: a reference to a frilly romantic period, reworked for the modern era.

Big sleeves are fun way to play up a basic top and add major interest to any outfit. Not only are they utterly chic, they also have a flirty vibe that works when giving off an airy stylish flair.

Heading somewhere warm for Spring break? This bell-sleeved one-and-done romper is for you. Modern and romantic - the cutest little vacay outfit that you ever did see.

Regardless of the season or location, feminine pieces always seem to find a way into my wardrobe (and become my instant favorite.) It’s the little details - a touch of lace, a super soft pale color, or a ladylike silhouette that captures my romantic’s heart. Somehow it all feels extra appropriate come springtime sunshine and blooming gardens.

I’ve been waiting for the chance to carry my coveted Cult Gaia bamboo handbag, (this blogger-favorite sells out all the time) –and it’s everything. With ideals based on femininity, Cult Gaia is a brand inspired by nature, old Hollywood and the ancient Greek goddess of Mother Earth. I love a classic show-stopping piece, and this one you can wear all spring/summer long. The design was inspired by a real vintage Japanese style bag, and is every bit whimsical as it is instagram worthy.

This Spring, why not add a little drama in your wardrobe? Anyone can wear this style. Puffed, bell-shaped, flared, ruffled, or just plain oversize, the choice is yours. Keep the rest of your outfit simple with relaxed denim and easy accessories. Exaggerated wrists pair surprisingly well with the likes of bamboo bags, straw hats, and mod-retro sunnies. Structure in your other pieces will counter the extra volume.

With the temps on the rise, now is the time for florals, ruffles, and statement sleeves galore!

I wish you a {springy} sunshine filled weekend!

Summer Blends

Three Trends To Try For Summer

Just like your favorite red wine blend, mixing different style combinations can leave you feeling good.

With summer around the corner it’s time to switch out warm layers for the light and breezy. We all know the summer basics: tees, shorts and sundresses, but since the heat can weigh you down, here are three easy ways to add some moxie to the usual summer mix. Enter: straw boat hat, off-the-shoulder tops, and flatform sandals.

Straw Boater Hat

Straw Boater Hat:
Top off your warm-weather look with a wide-brim straw boater. Boaters were popular among men as casual summer-wear in the late 19th century, especially for boating or sailing, hence the name. Recently, thin straw hats have become popular again among the fashion elite.  I love the vintage-French feel this one exudes. It’s the perfect accessory to top off any outfit. Toss one on for the beach, window shipping, or while running a quick errand. I bet you receive a least 3 compliments! Don’t miss the boat on this easy summer style. (Mine is on sale now, here.)

Off-The-Shouler

Off-The-Shoulder (OTS):
The off-the-shoulder top is the playful, sexy antidote to this year’s trend of minimalism. This style is so hot right now! It's a great option for showing some skin without being compromising. Even better, it’s a look that appeals to every taste: classic, romantic, or thrift-store bohemian. An OTS top can go from day to night and leaves plenty of room for accessorizing, think earrings. There are endless options of this look on the market right now. Waterfall sleeves, detailed embroidery and layers of ruffles. Don’t shrug-off this adorable wardrobe-elevating detail.

Flatform Shoes

Flatform Sandals:
Height of a platform, functionality of a flat, another perfect blend. Give yourself a lift with this comfortable sandal. (Seriously, though, these shoes are SO comfortable.)  I love how this style looks minimal and modern. We walked the span of the winery gardens and I didn't stop once to adjust or complain about my feet hurting. (Which might be a record!) The fact that this style allows for long-wear, and gives height makes it a no-brainer. It was so nice not having a stiletto constantly stuck in the dirt! A true summer style booster.

That’s it! Cheers to making an entrance in these statements pieces all summer long!
