Boots & Bags

Kitten Heels // Round Minaudière

With the change of the seasons a quick way to update your wardrobe is with a few new statement pieces – a pair of shiny new kicks, a chic structured bag, or a new set of shades.  (Or in my case, all the above!)

The Shoe

Little white ankle boots have been on my “list.” When I stumbled across these faux patent ankles boots at Zara, (and for a good price) I knew they were going to be my favorite newbies for fall. Bight white pops against the moody autumn skies and looks so cool with everything - dresses, jeans, and skirts. Be warned - they run a little small. I wish I would have sized up, but after breaking them in they have little give and are easy to walk in, with the low kitten heel.

The Bag

I shamelessly stalk Zara for outfit inspiration and fell in love with this minaudière - a small, decorative handbag often without handles or a strap.

This one features a handle, and an adjustable removable shoulder strap. It’s simple gold metal hardware is so 60s-mod. It reminds me of a bag one of my Barbie dolls had growing up! Maybe it was the nostalgia but I am so in love with this little purse. I know it will be the perfect companion for date nights and events around town. Just the right size for a phone, lipstick and card/money holder.

As for the rest of my outfit, the distinct golden/mustard yellow color dress is an oldie from Anthropologie that also has that retro drop-waist silhouette I love, and would be super-cute with  over-the-knee boots!

The denim jacket with distressed design, "J'adore Rock N' Roll" graphic on the back, was a sale item I happened upon for $10 folks! Playful and in that classic shade of blue, it will be a great laying item come cooler days.

You guys know black and white dominate my wardrobe, and these white boots and black bag will be sure to mix and match with ease, while elevating an everyday look!

When searching for new statement pieces for fall, make sure they are things that will easily transition into your own wardrobe. Stick to a color pallet, think about what makes sense for the season (boots, coats, hats, scarves) and avoid anything too “trendy” that you might only wear once or twice. These should be things that you know will get lots use.

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the week and make sure to share your new fall finds in the comments below! I love hearing/seeing what everyone is wearing as the temps start to cool!

Cheers babes!

Less Is More

Basics with a Twist

Because sometimes all it takes is a swipe of classic red lipstick (and a crushed pumpkin spice latte.)

Autumn brings so many styling opportunities. From drapey dresses and snuggly sweaters to structured jackets and statement boots.

While there are an endless number of ways to create an amazing outfit this fall, here is a simple one to inspire you.

Go fresh-faced, and accent with statement lip. (My current favorite is Chanel Rouge Coco in Arthur, but really any bright shade will do the trick.) Keep it easy and effortless. Slip into stripes and add your favorite weekend jeans.

I’m always on the hunt for minimal pieces with that extra something. Basic, yet elevated.

These high waist jeans are a perfect example, classic with a twist in the raw edge ankle and multi-button closure. (Plus my coffee-guzzling partner in crime here, keeping it simple in her black and white checks, and black boots.)

While I have a closet full of striped tops (don’t we all?) this particular one is unexpected in it's structure and crop (and it's less than $20!) The sheen makes the black against white pop – it’s about playing with contrasts. (The clean backdrop makes those red lips stand out in the best way!)

Add is some minimal flats (with that Zara edge) and a simple leather bag and your golden, girl!

Sophisticated and relaxed, for a weekend of fun or on the run.

Uptown Cool

Jessica Wagner

I am at a stage in life where everyone I know is either getting married, having babies or celebrating other monumental life moments. Which means, bring on the parties!

This weekend I am attending a wedding shower for one of my best friends and opted for an outfit that is comfortable without having to wear a skirt or dress, but isn’t quite a regular pair of trousers. (Free the ankle!)

I must admit I was on the fence when I started seeing this voluminous pant style becoming popular. Culottes are loose cropped trousers, cut with full legs that resemble a skirt.  If you’re not feeling it, I can understand why. They don’t exactly scream wearable or flattering to a lot of women. Styling these pants is particularly tricky, but don’t worry I’ve got your back!

Since giving them a shot, I have discovered they are an easy style statement-making piece and work for any occasion, in any season. Literally, all of your tops will look good with these bottoms. There's something about culottes that give off an effortless chic vibe.

Try a pair that is mid to high waist in a solid color. They work great with a crisp white button down, a striped tee, or even a tight fitting turtleneck. I can’t wait to style these with an all black ensemble. If you’re still not sold, think about treating culottes as you would a swingy midi skirt, pairing them with everything from a cropped leather jacket and heels, to an oversized sweater and booties.

I’m on the short side, so I feel like I pull this look off better with heels, but they are just as stylish with ballet flats, ankle boots or white sneakers.

You also can totally get away with wearing these to work, and like I said they are a comfortable option for brunch, a date and even a casual dinner party. It’s a great way to break away from the weekend denim, and step-up your office game.

If you still feel intimated by this out-of-the-ordinary silhouette, try on a pair and see if you like the length. There are different style options that might not be as big or flowy, and some that might have a higher waist or even tie at the hips, like the pair I am wearing (although styled in a way you can’t tell in these photos.) Culottes pack a lot of charisma, and when styled right have fashion-girl drawing power.

I styled mine in classic black and white with a loose daisy-textured top. (I love the dainty lace print!) I added mirror shades, my favorite bag for a pop of pale pink and mismatched earrings. How cool is this simple pearl paired with this mohawk style ear-climber?!

So whether you want to look uptown chic or downtown cool, there is a pair of culottes out there for you, you just need to be brave enough to give them a try.
